The region is highly regulated and foreign visitors have only been allowed from the year 1992 AD. Because of this the region remains somewhat isolated and the population has a unique cultural identity, influenced by both Tibet and Nepal. The typical Upper Mustang Trek takes about 19 days and includes visits to the remains of the ancient Lo kingdom and Muktinath.
