The only way to put a jacket designed for fishermen through its paces is to take it on an expedition. During a trip up Patagonia’s Chimehuin River, the hip-length Fisherman’s Jacket by Canadian clothier Nobis proved a hardy shield against both the damp and the cold.   This tailored shirt jacket fit a little more tightly than models from competitors like Orvis, meaning it held in heat despite being trundled up frigid feeder streams in a drizzle. Constructed with a polyurethane coated outer shell and water repellent-treated cotton then lined with mesh, the coat is kitted out with angled welt pockets for line and hooks and an interior zip pocket for stashing valuables. Nobis didn’t ignore the details. The chest pockets feature leather piping and shoulder epaulettes provide quick access to flies.   The rain hood did an admirable job of fending off lluvia even when the wind kicked up – an embedded in-peak wire lets the wearer shape the opening depending on conditions. The jacket was actually so successful at keeping heat in that, after a few hours of casting, the two pit zippers provide an invaluable cross breeze.   The best part is that even though the Fisherman is designed more for an activity than for everyday wear, it gracefully makes the transition from submerged to subway thanks to its slim cut and downtown accents.
